I have the honour to inform you that in my Despatch No. 201 of the 7th. June, I stated that it was my intention to open the Peak School to the children of all residents in the Hill District without distinction of race. There is, however, reason to believe that if this principle is adhered to the school is not likely to be a success because the parents of European children have a strong aversion to sending their children to a mixed school. There is at present only 1 Eurasian family residing in the Hill District and it is taught by a private Mistress, an expense the pater familias is well able to afford.

The principle of establishing Schools for the exclusive use of children of European race is well established in

this Colony, and it is not unreasonable that it should be extended to the Hill District which is with the exception referred to entire- -ly inhabited by Europeans. I have therefore to ask your sanction to restrict the use of the school to children of European parentage in the same way as the use of the Kowloon and Victoria Schools is

restricted.
